Background
New Providence Wharf, located next to Canary Wharf, is potentially the most important and largest of all the Docklands’ landmark developments. The 8.3-acre site, developed by Ballymore and designed by Skidmore Owings and Merrill, will offer a mixed-use urban village comprising 1051 apartments, a luxury hotel, 500,000 sq ft of office space and retail units, extensive leisure facilities and landscaped public spaces.
The dramatic and iconic 29-storey Ontario Tower is currently London’s tallest private residential riverside building. Accommodating 260 residential units, it is due to complete in 2006 with a projected cost of £40 million.
BASF Admixtures
The concrete used in this residential slip form tower used three BASF admixtures that supported the need for vertical pours with pumped concrete on a high structure.
Pozzolith 100-XR admixture is recommended for use in all types of concrete where moderate to extended retardation of set and improved performance are desired. This admixture improves pumped concrete, giving good finishing characteristics for flatwork and cast surfaces, and provides flexibility in scheduling of placing and finishing operations.
Glenium 27 is used to produce self-compacting concrete with the lowest possible water/cement ratio and no segregation or bleeding. Glenium 544 Sky has the characteristics of allowing easier placing and faster strength development, as well as improved concrete surfaces. From the contractor’s point of view, Glenium 544 Sky provides a more versatile and forgiving concrete mix and guarantees that the concrete placed is the same as that specified and ordered from the ready-mix plant
